The church is located in a largely African- American neighborhood that appreciates the church's welcoming presence. In recent years the area has seen the creation of a senior residence building, new subsidized housing, a new bank branch, removal of deteriorated housing and establishment of a three-block neighborhood organization, called "3 M" for Menard, Mayfield and Mason streets. 27 market rate condominiums will soon be bulit on Corcoran, the street one block north of the church.
Recognizing the work still to be done, the church cooperates with the community in improvement efforts. The church assists in community maintenance and is the site of a daycare center for neighborhood children. The Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (C.A.P.S.) program representatives hold meetings regularly at the church for consultation on neighborhood issues. (Visit the C.A.P.S. website for more information.)
Third Unitarian has an excellent reputation as a good neighbor and has members who live nearby. Members feel secure and comfortable attending day and evening events.
