11:30am - Forum in the Pulpit

We are proud to welcome Arewa Karen Winter, one of the three elected members of the 15th Police District Community Accountability Council here in Austin.  She wil speak at our 11:30 a.m. Forum Service on April 28. Arewa found herself at the center of Chicago’s policing crisis in April 2016, when her sixteen-year-old nephew was killed by police on the West Side.  She founded the 411 Movement for Pierre Loury to support other bereaved families fighting for justice.  She was a plaintiff in the lawsuit that led to Chicago’s federal consent decree on police reform, and co-chaired the Use of Force Community Working Group created in its wake. Arewa is now even busier than before, as she’s become a leader of the fight for justice in the recent shooting death of Dexter Reed.  Ms. Winter will speak remotely as a family event takes her to New Orleans.  Johanna Ryan facilitating.
